The truth about accountability

 You may have heard you want to get an accountability partner to keep yourself motivated on your affiliate marketing journey.

Can accountability actually help?

The answer is that it can help, when you apply it correctly.  

But if you don't apply accountability correctly, it can actually backfire.

A lot of people think the best way to stay motivated is to find an "accountability partner" - someone to whom we have to report our efforts and results.

But research shows this can potentially backfire IF someone doesn't have a clear picture of what this relationship is going to look like.

If you are going to seek external accountability, ask someone you care about to hold you accountable for a specific part of your goal (i.e. timeline, first steps or certain targets).

Now, there's even more to the accountability story than that.

In a study done at the University of Chicago, a specific kind of feedback early on demotivated people.

That kind of feedback is negative feedback. And it kills your motivation if your accountability partner is too negative.

So you want to have positive feedback early on.

Now here's where things get interesting.

Even positive feedback can have a negative impact if it's not done properly.

Just having someone say, "You're great!" may feel good, but it doesn't always help you make progress.

You need someone who can offer you honest feedback when things are off course.

It's okay for your partner to praise you after hitting a target.

Just make sure they offer more than empty praise like "You're awesome!"

Instead, have them focus on the specific actions you took that were worthwhile. This reminds you to keep repeating those actions going forward.

When you apply these subtle distinctions, you'll see a big difference in how accountability helps you achieve your goals.
